Tips on Mandatory Home Quarantine

From the novel coronavirus epidemic, more and more people are now in mandatory home quarantine.

What should people be mindful of when undergoing home quarantine? Are we at any risk if there are home confines in our building? Research has shown that the incubation period of the virus can be as long as 24 days. Is a 14-day quarantine enough?

We’ve invited Professor David Hui, Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics of CUHK to explain the details.

Q1: Why impose mandatory home quarantine?

A: Arranging home quarantine can effectively monitor the health condition of those in quarantine. They can be transferred to hospitals for isolation and treatment as soon as possible if they develop the relevant symptoms. This arrangement can help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Q2: There are home confinees in my building. Are they confirmed cases?

A: As announced by the government, starting from 8 February, all people entering Hong Kong from the mainland and those who have been to the mainland in the past 14 days preceding arrival in Hong Kong are placed in quarantine. Those being put in quarantine are not confirmed or suspected cases and they have no symptoms. Cases fulfilling the notification criteria for novel coronavirus symptoms will be reported to the Centre for Health Protection and it will be arranged for them to enter hospital for isolation and treatment.

Q3: I live nearby a home confinee. Will I be infected?

A: As mentioned, those being put in quarantine are not confirmed or suspected cases and they have no symptoms. The main mode of transmission of the novel coronavirus is through respiratory droplets or through contact. As the droplets have weight, their transmission distance is 1-1.8 metres. Therefore, theoretically, the risk of nearby residents getting infected is very low.

Q4: Are home confinees not allowed to leave their home at all? How do they arrange food supplies?

A: People in quarantine should not leave home. They must remain at home at all times. And they are not allowed to leave home for shopping or dining. They need to rely on others to deliver food to them.

Q5: When in home quarantine, what should they be mindful of?

A: They are required to check body temperature twice a day and record their physical condition. They should contact healthcare personnel immediately if they have fever or develop other symptoms. They will be sent to hospital immediately after assessment. In addition, they should maintain personal and household hygiene. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Get plenty of rest. Do not share personal items. Keep windows open to maintain good indoor ventilation.

Q6: Research has shown that the incubation period of the virus can be as long as 24 days. Is a 14-day quarantine enough?

A: The main mode of transmission of the novel coronavirus is through respiratory droplets. The virus can also be transmitted through contact. Current information suggests that the incubation period ranges from 2-11 days but can be as long as 14 days. The 24-day incubation period shown in research is for very rare cases. As a matter of fact, patients normally develop their symptoms at day 4 or day 5. So it is pretty safe to have a 14-day quarantine.
