Incoming Elective Clinical Attachment
Elective attachment opportunities are available for medical students who intend to broaden their horizons through learning in CUHK. Clinical attachments are available for 4 to 8 weeks in a single department, subject to availability. Accepted students will participate in teaching and learning activities alongside CUHK medical students.
I. Elective Application Information
Applicants are advised to review departmental requirements, including blackout periods and other conditions, before selecting a school or department. Please note that placements cannot be divided between multiple specialties.

B. Application Guidelines
1. A duly completed application form must be submitted via the online system (HERE) at least 6 months in advance of the commencement of the proposed period of elective attachment.
2. Elective attachment must be 4 to 8 weeks in length. An exception applies to Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, which offers a 2-week attachment.
3. Late applications will NOT be accepted or considered under any circumstances.
4. Applicants should submit the following documents together with the application form:
- A recent passport-size photograph;
- Copy of HKID card, passport, or entry permit;
- Copy of Student ID card;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Official transcript;
- Recommendation Letter from the Dean of your medical school;
- Vaccination record of injected MMR vaccine and Varicella vaccine OR a blood test report showing Rubella antigen and Varicella antigen and
- Proof of insurance coverage
5. Applicants will be notified of their application results within 12 weeks after submitting the application forms.
C. Insurance Requirements
Students must provide proof of the following types of insurance for the period of their elective attachments:
- Medical malpractice insurance
- Professional Indemnity Insurance
- Personal accident and life insurance
- Travel insurance (for non-local applicants)
D. Language
Students will participate in teaching and learning sessions alongside our medical students. While English is the primary language of instruction, Cantonese may occasionally be used for patient-related activities.
E. Dress Code
Students are required to bring their own white coat for clinical sessions. Scrubs may be required for specific attachments, such as surgical or labour wards.
- Professional attire is mandatory. Casual clothing or footwear, such as T-shirts, jeans, sneakers, or sandals, is strictly prohibited.
F. Fees:
- No tuition or application fees will be charged for the elective placement.
- However, students are responsible for covering all living and personal expenses during their stay. Financial aid or stipends will not be provided.
II. Visas/Entry Permits for Study in Hong Kong (for non-local applicants)
All non-local applicants are required obtain a valid visa/entry permit for study in the HKSAR. Failure to do so will result in cancellation or deferral of the elective.
Participation in academic activities (e.g., classes, tutorials) on a travel visa or endorsement is strictly prohibited and considered a violation of immigration regulations. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure appropriate entry arrangements are made prior to arrival.
You will only be guided to complete the application for visa/entry permit after departmental approval and issuance of the official confirmation letter via the online platform.
A. Application Procedures
- Step 1: Applicant prepares the required documents a) Application for Entry for Study in Hong Kong (ID995A) & b) Supporting Documents as listed in Guidebook for Entry for Study in Hong Kong*
- Step 2: Applicant uploads all the required documents in one PDF to the online application system
- Step 3: CU Medicine completes Application for Entry for Study (Sponsor) in Hong Kong (ID995B) and submits the application to the Immigration Department by post
- Step 4: Immigration Department processes the application in 6-8 weeks
- Step 5: Applicant will receive notice once Immigration Department approves your application
- Step 6: Applicant settles the online payment and obtains the visa/entry permit (in the form of “e-Visa”)
*All supporting documents must be in English or Chinese. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by a certified English or Chinese translation from an official translator.
