GPS Student Wins Merit Award at International Oncology Congress

Year 5 GPS student KWAN Sui Chun Sampson won the Merit Award at European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Asia Congress 2019 with his abstract “Neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratios as robust prognostic markers in sarcomas: A population-based analysis of 3746 sarcoma patients from Hong Kong” and the oral presentation.

Sampson has been working under the supervision of Dr Herbert LOONG, his GPS Project Mentor, since 2017. He is exceptionally grateful for Dr Loong’s guidance and support in the past few months, especially with helping him prepare for the conference, including practising the oral presentation. “Dr Loong is an excellent mentor, and highly recommended for my junior GPS classmates!” Sampson commented.

“Sampson, as a GPS student who is also busy with his clinical years, has been helping out in various aspects of our sarcoma epidemiological research as well as co-authoring our lung cancer review articles. I believe this award is a great achievement by Sampson and a positive recognition of the GPS programme,” said Dr Loong.

In addition to having the chance to present research findings, the three days in Conference have also furthered Sampson’s interest in oncology. He was able to learn about some of the newest developments in oncology from experts in this field, including from Professor Tony Mok. It has been very exciting to Sampson, and he thanked GPS for allowing students to be involved with medical research.
