The COVID-19 pandemic is both a medical and a community challenge.  Public health specialists must be ahead of any treatments or policies. In this study, the first 53 laboratory-confirmed cases in Hong Kong were studied and the ‘semi-intrinsic’ epidemiological properties of SARS-CoV-2 were provided as a reference for other countries where drastic interventions had not yet been implemented. Moreover, the study highlighted the transmission risk of social interaction and the pivotal role of physical distancing in combating the pandemic.
