The study of the “Global incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer and their correlation with socioeconomic indicators temporal patterns and trends in 41 countries” looked at two major histologic types of oesophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Although squamous cell carcinoma has been historically more prevalent, a rapid rise of adenocarcinoma in western countries has been observed in recent years. As many risk factors of adenocarcinoma could be modified, such as obesity, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, cigarette smoking, and diet low in vegetables and fruit, more resources should be committed to primary prevention strategies to control this disease and prevent future global health burden (Sci Rep. 2018 Mar 14;8(1):4522. doi: 10.1038/s41598-018-19819-8).

Anyone interested in future collaboration in this field of research is welcome to contact our key investigator, Prof Martin Wong of our School of Public Health and Primary Care. Prof Wong’s research interest is in the study of chronic diseases in family practice with a focus on preventive medicine and screening and the effectiveness of primary care interventions.
