The large population registry-based study “Excess Burden of Mental Illness and Hospitalization in Young-Onset Type 2 Diabetes: A Population-Based Cohort Study” shows that adults with Young-Onset Type 2 Diabetes have excess hospitalizations across their lifespan compared with persons with usual-onset, including an unexpectedly large burden of mental illness in young adulthood. This costly burden is an urgent call for policymakers, payers, patients, and health care providers to take preventive action (Ann Intern Med. 2019 Jan 15. doi: 10.7326/M18-1900. [Epub ahead of print]).
