Accurate identification of type 1 and 2 diabetes is critical since the management, epidemiology and prognosis of these two diseases are different. Validated algorithms using electronic health records (EHRs) have been developed to classify them. However, it was only limited to white paediatric populations and could not be applied to Asian population. The study “Development and validation of algorithms to classify type 1 and 2 diabetes according to age at diagnosis using electronic health records” is the only validation study in Asian population and one of the largest validation studies of algorithms using EHRs to classify diabetes type. The set of algorithms developed could accurately identify type 1 and 2 diabetes for different ages at diagnosis. (BMC Med Res Methodol. 2020 Feb 24;20(1):35. doi: 10.1186/s12874-020-00921-3.)
